WhatsApp considers showing ads in Status and Channels to generate more revenue
In a strategic move aimed at expanding revenue streams and enhancing user experience, Meta-owned WhatsApp is reportedly exploring the addition of advertisements within its Status and Channels features. While the messaging giant remains firm on not introducing ads in the primary inbox, the move to incorporate them in Status (resembling Stories) and Channels is seen as an effort to leverage these sections for targeted promotions, according to a report by TechCrunch.
In an interview with Brazilian media, WhatsApp’s Head, Will Cathcart, clarified the company’s stance on advertising within the platform. He emphasized that there are no plans to display ads in the primary inbox but acknowledged the possibility of integrating them into other areas of the messaging app. This revelation comes in contrast to a previous denial made in September, where WhatsApp rejected claims of exploring ads in chats following a report by Financial Times.
Cathcart stated, “The reason I qualified [sic] the answer is that there could be ads in other places — channels or status. For example, channels might charge people to subscribe, they might be exclusive to paid members or the owners might want to promote the channel. But, no, we won’t put ads in your inbox,” as reported by TechCrunch.
The move to consider ads in Status and Channels aligns with the industry trend of integrating advertisements in features that mimic popular formats, such as Stories found on various social media platforms. WhatsApp appears to be exploring innovative ways to monetize specific functionalities without compromising the core messaging experience.

Amidst these discussions, WhatsApp continues to enhance its platform. The latest stable update, currently in the rollout phase for iOS users, brings a significant improvement to group calls. Previously, WhatsApp allowed 32 participants in a video call but restricted initiation to 15 participants. With the latest update, the platform has expanded this limit, allowing more users—significantly improving the group call experience by accommodating up to 32 participants initiating the call simultaneously. This update addresses a previous limitation where only seven users could initiate a group video call.
