Meta-owned popular instant messaging platform WhatsApp is available on multiple platforms including Android, iPhone and web. The social media giant keeps adding new features to the messaging service to improve the user experience. Now, the company has announced a new privacy feature for WhatsApp. To add an extra layer of security, the messaging app added the ‘ViewOnce’ feature for photos and videos in 2021.The company has now announced the feature forvoice messages as well. With this feature, users can now send a voice message that will disappear once the receiver has listened to it. The company has confirmed that the feature will be rolled out globally.
What it means for users
This feature can come in handy in multiple situations which includes reading out credit card details to a friend or planning a surprise. With this feature, users can also share sensitive information without being concerned
For consistency with View Once photos and videos, View Once voice messages will also be marked with the “one-time” icon. Just like the view once photos, these voice messages can only be played one time.
In its support page, WhatsApp notes that it protects user’s voice messages with end-to-end encryption by default, just like any other personal messages. The company claims that the view once feature is an example of its continued privacy-related innovations.

It is important to note that users need to open a view once voice message within 14 days of it being sent, else it’ll expire soon. These messages cannot be forwarded, saved, starred, or shared. However, if a view once message hasn’t been opened yet it can be restored from backups.

The company also advises users to send a view once message only to people they trust. It is worth noting that there are other ways to save a view once voice message. For example, users can record the view once voice message using another device.
WhatsApp will also allow users to report an inappropriate view once voice message. Android users will be able record a view once voice message using the native screen recorder.
