Netflix has started testing its cloud gaming service in the US after previously launching limited trials in Canada and the UK. With the new cloud gaming service, members can play games on smart TVs and TV-connected devices such as Fire TV, Chromecast, and Roku, using their mobile phone as the gaming controller.
According to Netflix’s recent blog post, it is conducting a beta test with a limited number of users, similar to the initial launch in Canada and the UK. So, not everyone will be able to try out the games on their televisions. As with the previous test, only two games are made available for streaming: Oxenfree, which is developed by Netflix’s own Night School Studio, and Molekew’s Mining Adventure.
In order to play Netflix’s streamed games on your TV, you will need to download the special controller app on your iPhone or Android device. It is important to note that this service is currently available on select devices such as Amazon Fire TV devices, Chromecast with Google TV, Roku devices, and TVs, among others. If you plan to play games on the web, you can do so using a mouse and keyboard.
Netflix is expanding its games library to provide more benefits to its subscribers. While most of its games are available on mobile devices, the company wants to expand beyond iOS and Android.
Its games library currently includes titles based on popular series like “Love Is Blind,” “The Queen’s Gambit,” “Stranger Things,” “Narcos,” and “Nailed It!,” along with other generally popular games like puzzles, platformers, card games, strategy games, and kids’ games. But the streaming giant is not stopping there.
According to The Wall Street Journal’s report, Netflix plans to release games based on its hit franchises like Squid Game, Wednesday, Extraction, and Black Mirror. The company has also discussed licensing a game from the Grand Theft Auto series with Take-Two.
