NEW DELHI: Captain Rohit Sharma gave flying starts to India in most of the matches in the World Cup. Even in the final against Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, the ‘Hitman’ was stepping out to fast bowlers to go for his shots and disturb their rhythm.
Asked to bat first by Australia captain Pat Cummins, India lost Shubman Gill in the fifth over but that did not stop Rohit from being the aggressor.
Rohit hit Glenn Maxwell for a six and four on the first two deliveries of the 10th over and then charged again looking for a big hit on the third delivery.
Maxwell bowled a flighted delivery angling away and Rohit got a leading edge that went flying over the covers. Travis Head ran back from cover-point, dived full length forward and grabbed it clean just inches from the ground.
The Ahmedabad crowd was stunned into silence as the Indian captain fell for a 31-ball 47, a knock that was studded with 3 sixes and 4 fours.
