On a day when India chase their 3rd World Cup crown against Australia at Ahmedabad, Kapil Dev who was the captain of the legendary 1983 World Cup winning side was, in his own words, not invited to the Narendra Modi Stadium.

“I wasn’t invited there. They didn’t call me so I did not go. As simple as that. I wanted the whole ’83 team to be there with me but I guess due to the fact that it’s such a big event and people are so busy handling responsibilities, sometimes they forget,” Dev said when asked why he wasn’t there in the final.

According to reports, BCCI will honour all the former World Cup winning captains during the mid-innings break so Dev’s absence from the event will be raising more than a few eyebrows.

On June 25, 1983, India, under the captaincy of Dev, had lifted the World Cup then called the Prudential Cup for the first time by defeating a star-studded West Indian unit to lift the trophy and make history.

The match was played at Lord’s, the home of cricket, and India won the toss and elected to bat. They got off to a good start but were restricted by West Indies bowlers to 183. Andy Roberts, Malcom Marshall, Michael Holding and Joel Garner did a fine job with the ball.

The West Indies were never really in the chase, and and ultimately fell short by 43 runs as India eventually won the match.

Festive offer

India’s victory in the 1983 World Cup was a major upset, but it was also a historic moment for the country. It was the first time that India had won the World Cup, and it helped to put Indian cricket on the map.
