Afghan Spinners bamboozled the English batters on Monday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The effort from the tweakers led the Asian side to a famous World Cup upset. The batting unit of the defending champions had no answers to the likes of Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi.

Former Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar who was a prolific scorer against the slower bowlers shared a piece of advice for the England batters on his X account. “Wonderful all-round effort by Afghanistan led by a solid knock from @RGurbaz_21. Bad day for @ECB_cricket. Against quality spinners, you have to read them from their hand, which the England batters failed to do. They read them off the pitch instead, which I felt led to their downfall. Loved the energy they carried on the field. Well played @ACBofficials!,” he would Tweet on Monday night.

While there were many overs where the battle between the English batters and Afghan spinners was absorbing to watch. The over from Mujeeb to Chris Woakes was a joy for cricket viewers who love spin bowling. The off-spinner bowled stump to stump and varied his pace beautifully on a surface which was gripping and turning. He also sprinkled his carrom balls and off-breaks in that over. The over had plenty of plays and misses and it ended with Mujeeb cleaning Woakes’ stumps as the batter tried to drive the ball and missed it completely.

Rashid Khan too had a fabulous day with three wickets. The leg-spinner took a pasting against the same opposition in the 2019 World Cup when he gave away 110 runs from nine overs. He did have his redemption on Monday. Seasoned campaigner Nabi too chipped in with a couple of wickets on the day.
