Afghanistan displayed incredible grit and determination to leave defending champions – indiansupdate
In a surprising turn of events, Afghanistan displayed incredible grit and determination to leave defending champions England shell-shocked in a thrilling match at the ICC World Cup. Historically, Afghanistan has struggled to seize “big” moments in the game, often letting victories slip through their fingers against teams like India and Pakistan. However, on October 15, the tables turned, and Afghanistan emerged as the hunter, not the hunted.
In a match that left both teams with a one-win-two-loss record, Afghanistan posted a formidable 284 runs, which proved to be a significant challenge for England. The defending champions, still reeling from the shock of the Afghan batting display, ultimately succumbed to the pressure, resulting in a historic 69-run victory for Afghanistan. This triumph ended Afghanistan’s 14-match losing streak in the World Cup since 2015 and reshuffled the points table with Australia finding themselves at the bottom.
The English team, at first, appeared to underestimate the Afghan challenge, believing they could easily chase down the target as India had done just a few days earlier. However, the Afghan bowlers had other plans. After seamer Fazal Farooqi trapped Jonny Bairstow leg-before, the spin trio of Mujeeb-ur-Rahman, Mohammad Nabi, and Rashid Khan wreaked havoc, sharing eight wickets. Joe Root played the wrong line, and in-form Dawid Malan chipped a catch to short extra-cover.
The English hopes rested briefly on Harry Brook, who watched helplessly as Jos Buttler was bowled, Liam Livingstone fell leg-before, Sam Curran offered a low catch to the lone slip fielder, and Chris Woakes’s stumps were shattered. Harry Brook’s brave 61-ball 66 was the lone resistance before he became Rahman’s third victim. The last two wickets managed to add a few more runs before falling to Rashid Khan.
Earlier, drawing from their recent experience of playing India at the same ground, Afghanistan posted a substantial total. The openers, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, adopted contrasting approaches. Gurbaz dominated the partnership with a dynamic 75, while Zadran succumbed to Adil Rashid. The dismissal of Rahmat Shah and the run-out of Gurbaz put England back in the game. However, Ikram Ali’s resilient 58 and productive partnerships with Rashid and Rahman allowed Afghanistan to exceed its previous total of 272/8 against India, albeit falling short of their best score of 288 against West Indies in 2019.
