The New York trial of former US president Donald Trump which began on Monday has left a question mark on the presidential bid of the 77-year-old businessman turned politician. Donald Trump is facing a criminal trial in the hush money case linked to adult film star Stormy Daniels, also known as Stephanie Clifford.
The charges against Trump have been made at the behest of a $130,000 payment Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. According to the prosecutor, the payment was made in return for Daniels’ silence over her alleged affair with Trump. After the payment, Cohen was repaid the amount in the form of instalments that were labelled as ‘legal fees’ in company records. The allegations have been rejected by the former US president.
Who is Stormy Daniels?
-Porn star Stormy Daniels who is at the centre of the controversy is a well-known celebrity for more than two decades in the adult entertainment business.
-Stormy Daniels’ real name is Stephanie Clifford and is 45 years old and from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Daniels went public with allegations against Donald Trump that the two had an affair over a decade earlier.
-Known by Stephanie Clifford by her friends and family, the former Playboy model was raised by her mother after her parents’ divorce.
-Stormy Daniels was neglected by her family and sexually abused at the age of nine by an older man, reported Agence France-Presse referring to her 2018 memoir.
-Despite a traumatic childhood, Daniels was a bright student who excelled in her academic career and was passionate about horses.
-She entered into the industry after working as a striptease. Later, she became a star actress, director and screenwriter and even earned several awards.
-In 2006, Daniels crossed paths with the real estate mogul during a charity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe. At that time, Daniels was 27 whereas Trump was 60, reported AFP.
-According to Daniels, Trump invited her to his suite. In response to Daniels’s claims, Trump has denied having any kind of physical relationship with the adult film star. He has also accused Daniels of ‘extortion’. Daniels has a daughter and she married for the fourth time in 2022 to fellow porn actor Barrett Blade.
Not a rape victim, says Daniels
ehAfter publically claiming to have an affair with Donald Trump, Daniels has clarified that she was not a victim in the case and said that her relationshipt with Trump was consensual.
Once the transaction was revealed in 2018, Daniels asked courts to nullify her nondisclosure agreement with Trump and began making the rounds on television shows.
“I’ve maintained it wasn’t rape in any fashion… but I didn’t say ‘no,’ because I just — I was nine years old again,” AFP quoted Daniels’ statement on CBS’s “60 Minutes.”
