NEW DELHI: More than 30 people have lost their lives due to heavy rainfall in Pakistan, leading to the closure of thousands of schools, officials announced on Sunday.
The continuous downpours since Thursday have caused significant disruption in several parts of the country. In Balochistan province, all schools will remain closed until Thursday.
Tragically, 26 individuals, including 18 children, perished in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province due to collapsed buildings.
“As a result of continuous rainfall over the past four days in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a total of 27 individuals have lost their lives,” said Taimur Ali Khan, the spokesperson for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Additionally, one person died in a landslide, while over 150 houses were damaged. In southern Balochistan, five people lost their lives as buildings collapsed on Thursday and Friday.
Reports suggest that roads have been damaged, floods have occurred, and landslides have isolated villages from main towns in Balochistan.
The Meteorological Department of Pakistan forecasts further rainfall and snowfall in the region on Sunday.
