President Droupadi Murmu conferred Bharat Ratna upon former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao Garu posthumously on Saturday. On behalf of the late Congress leader, the Bharat Ratna was received by PV Prabhakar Rao, his son.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded PV Narasimha Rao Garu in a post on X. He said, “Every Indian cherishes what PV Narasimha Rao Garu has done for our nation and feels proud that he has been conferred the Bharat Ratna.” 

“He worked extensively to further our country’s progress and modernization. He is also known as a respected scholar and thinker. His contributions will forever be cherished,” PM Modi added.

Who is PV Narasimha Rao?

PV Narasimha Rao was a veteran Congress leader. He had served as the country’s prime minister from June 21, 1991 to May 16, 1996. He was born on June 28, 1921 in Karimnagar. He studied in Osmania University, Hyderabad, Bombay University and the Nagpur University.

He was the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in 1971-73 and General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee in 1975-76. He was also a member of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1957-77; member of Lok Sabha in 1977-84 and was elected to Eighth Lok Sabha from Ramtek in December in 1984.

Rao had taken over as the Home Minister on July 19, 1984. He was re-appointed to this post, with the additional charge of the Ministry of Planning, on November 5, 1984. He was appointed Minister of Defence from December 31, 1984 to September 25, 1985. On September 25, 1985, he had taover as Minister of Human Resource Development.

Besides Narsimha Rao, President Murmu conferred Bharat Ratna upon former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh posthumously, Dr MS Swaminathan posthumously and former Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur posthumously.
