At the New York Young Republican Club’s 111th Annual Gala, former President Donald Trump reiterated his controversial statement about wanting to be a “dictator for one day” if reelected. This reaffirmation came in response to a New York Times article by Peter Baker, which discussed Trump’s previous comments on the subject.
During his keynote speech, Trumpaddressed Baker’s article, clarifying, “I didn’t say that.I said I want to be a dictator for one day. You know why I wanted to be a dictator? Because I want a wall, and I want to drill, drill, drill.” His remarks were met with audience chants of “build a wall,” to which Trump responded affirmatively.
The context of Trump’s statement was a recent Fox News town hall with Sean Hannity, where he was questioned about potential abuse of power if reelected. Trump humorously replied, “Except for day one,” indicating his plans to close the border and focus on drilling activities on his hypothetical first day back in office.
These comments have raised concerns among Democrats and some Republicans about the potential risks to democracy and abuse of power in a second Trump term.
When asked about Trump’s comments, White House spokesman Andrew Bates said Biden “has been working to protect American democracy and to unite people of all political views against these unprecedented threats” without mentioning Trump by name.
President Joe Biden, commenting on Trump’s statement at a fundraiser in Los Angeles, humorously remarked, “Thank God, only one day.”
“He’s saying it out loud,” said the US president. Biden has sought to use Trump’s words against him on a number of occasions as a way to boost his own political prospects, casting Trump as a threat to democracy.
Trump continues to lead the Republican field for the upcoming election, with a significant lead over his rivals in various polls.
Trump, the Republican frontrunner headed for a likely election re-match with Biden in 2024, has frequently promised “retribution” against political opponents if he gains power again. He has also called for the “termination” of parts of the Constitution over his false claims that his loss to Biden in the 2020 election was due to massive voter fraud.
