NEW DELHI: A 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit northeastern Japan’s Fukushima region on Thursday, as per the Japan Meteorological Agency. However, no tsunami warning was issued.
There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The quake’s epicenter was 40 kilometers deep and was felt in Tokyo.
Japan, known for its high seismic activity, enforces stringent construction standards to ensure buildings can endure strong earthquakes.
The country, with a population of about 125 million, faces around 1,500 tremors annually, mostly minor.
This update follows a recent major quake in Taiwan that claimed nine lives and left over 1,000 injured. The magnitude-7.4 tremor on Wednesday caused damage to numerous structures in Taiwan and triggered tsunami alerts reaching Japan and the Philippines.
