Uttarakhand landslide: Amid severe rainfall, a major landslide in Uttarakhand’s Gaurikund left several people injured and many houses and shops destroyed on Friday. A team from the state disaster response force (SDRF) has begun the search and rescue operation.
According to the officials of the Rudraprayag disaster management, around 10 to 12 people are feared to be buried or washed away in the landslide. Gaurikund is named after Goddess Parvati. It is a pilgrimage site and also serves as a basecamp for trek to Kedarnath Temple.

Meanwhile, the Gangotri National Highway, 500 metres ahead of Bhatwadi, was closed to traffic since Thursday morning due to falling debris. The traffic caused disruption for the devotees of the Gangotri Dham Yatra, who are now stranded on the route. The route was being cleared to restroe traffic on the highway as soon as possible. Several other roads were also blocked due to falling debris and landslides in different parts of Uttarakhand.

The road near Nandaprayag and Chhinka on the Badrinath National Highway which was blocked due to debris earlier on Thursday was opened the same day, officials said.

The Indian Meteorological Deparment has predicted heavy rainfall in the state in coming days. In its latest bulletin, the weather forecasting agency has predicted heavy rainfall in the state for Friday. It has predicted widespread rainfall in most parts of the state till 8 August.
