Renowned art director Nitin Chandrakant Desai tragically passed away on the morning of August 2nd, reportedly having taken his own life. Nitin was highly regarded in both Hindi and Marathi cinema for his exceptional work as an art director and production designer. His lifeless body was discovered in his studio, ND Studio in Karjat, by his colleagues, who promptly notified the authorities.

Nitin, who was 58 years old, had left an indelible mark on the film industry with his outstanding art direction in movies such as ‘Devdas,’ ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam,’ and ‘Jodha Akbar,’ among others. According to local MLA Mahesh Baldi from Karjat, a member of the BJP, financial difficulties may have been a contributing factor in Nitin’s decision to take such a tragic step. Over the past five years, his workload had noticeably decreased compared to earlier times, as per the available reports.

Throughout his illustrious career, Nitin was recognized with numerous accolades. He secured the National Film Award for Best Art Director an impressive four times: in 1999 for ‘Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar,’ in 2000 for ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam,’ in 2002 for the Oscar-nominated ‘Lagaan,’ and in 2003 for ‘Devdas.’ Additionally, he received the Filmfare Best Art Direction award in 1995 for ‘1942: A Love Story,’ in 1997 for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Khamoshi,’ and again in 2003 for ‘Devdas.’ Furthermore, he was honored with the IFA Best Art Direction Award in 2009 for his work on ‘Jodha Akbar’ and received various Screen Awards for films such as ‘Khamoshi,’ ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam,’ ‘Josh,’ and ‘Lagaan,’ among others.

The talented art director’s achievements were not confined to the national level; he also won the Maharashtra State award for ‘Harishchandrachi Factory’ in 2009. His immense contributions to the world of cinema will undoubtedly be remembered and cherished by the industry and fans alike.
