NEW DELHI: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has taken a significant step towards enhancing educational opportunities for the brave personnel serving in the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. Recently, IGNOU signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the three defence forces to offer skill-based Bachelor degree programmes to the Agniveers. The application process is now open on the official website – ignou.ac.in.

The collaboration between IGNOU and the Armed Forces has resulted in the introduction of five skill-based courses for the Agniveers:

  1. BAAS: Bachelor of Arts (Applied Skills)
  2. BAASTM: Bachelor of Arts (Applied Skills) Tourism Management
  3. BAASMSME: Bachelor of Arts (Applied Skills) MSME
  4. BCOMAS: Bachelor of Commerce (Applied Skills)
  5. BSCAS: Bachelor of Science (Applied Skills)

These programmes present a unique combination of discipline-based courses and skill courses. The total credit requirement for each program is 120, with IGNOU offering 60 credits through its courses, while the remaining 60 credits come from in-service skill education provided by the Armed Forces.
The skill courses offered by the Armed Forces are approved by the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET), the regulatory body for skill education. Moreover, these programmes align with the recommendations of the National Education Policy 2020, aiming to integrate higher education with skill development.
The collaboration aims to empower the Agniveers by enabling them to pursue a Bachelor’s degree while actively serving in the forces. Upon completion of these skill-based programmes, the Agniveers’ employability is expected to improve significantly after their service tenure.
The admission process for Agniveers from the Indian Air Force was inaugurated at a ceremony held at the IGNOU Campus on August 1, 2023. The event witnessed the launch of an exclusive Admission Portal designed specifically for the Agniveers. The initiative received the support of Pro Vice Chancellors, Directors of Schools and Divisions, Regional Directors of all the Regional Centres, and senior officers from the Indian Air Force.
