Earlier, the government imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC in Nuh and Gurgaon. Later, in response to a request for assistance, the Centre dispatched 20 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to the state.
While Nuh police held a peace meeting with members of both communities on Monday night, there was heavy security deployment on all roads connecting the Muslim-majority district. Security was also tightened at Char Qutub, an 800-year-old dargah in Hisar.
Communal tension flared up at Nuh Chowk after a religious procession organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) reached there. The atmosphere was charged with tension building up on social media for a day after a member of the Bajrang Dal announced he would take part in the procession. In reaction to this, threatening videos were posted on social media handles.
When the procession reached Nuh Chowk, provocative slogans were allegedly made, and stones were thrown, leading to clashes between the two groups. Police vehicles were damaged, and a temple provided refuge to many participants as police tried to ensure their safety.
As police began deploying heavily in Nuh, videos and forwards about the violence led to mobs gathering at Sohna Chowk in Gurgaon. Arsonists targeted vehicles and carts, and an outnumbered police force faced challenges. Authorities have appealed to the public to refrain from posting offensive content on social media and maintain peace.
While Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar appealed for peace, Home Minister Anil Vij emphasized the government’s focus on ensuring peace and maintaining law and order. Congress MLA Aftab Ahmed urged people to avoid rumors and maintain peace during this challenging situation.
