Fernando Villavicencio, a member of the national assembly, was shot in the head and killed after an event in Quito, Ecuador on Wednesday.
The attack occurred as he was getting into a car, member of his campaign team told local media, as cited by BBC News.
Current president, Guillermo Lasso, confirmed his death on social media.
Reacting to the incident, Guillermo Lasso, “Outraged and shocked by the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio. My solidarity and condolences to his wife and daughters. For his memory and for his fight, I assure you that this crime will not go unpunished.
The Security Cabinet will meet in a few minutes in Carondelet. I have asked the president of the CNE, Diana Atamaint; the State Attorney General, Diana Salazar; the President of the National Court of Justice, Iván Saquicela; and to the other State authorities to attend this meeting urgently to discuss this fact that has dismayed the country.”
Meanwhile, another presidential candidate Luisa Gonzales said, “This makes us all mourn, my solidarity to all his family … This vile act will not go unpunished!”
Daniel Nobo Azin, another candidate reacted saying, “This is an attack against the country, democracy and peace of all Ecuadorians.”
Suspect died from injuries
A suspect in the killing of Villavicencio has died from injuries sustained during a shootout, the attorney general’s office said on Wednesday on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
Villavicencio was killed on Wednesday evening during a campaign event in northern Quito, with local media reporting the former lawmaker had been shot.
“A suspect, who was injured during the shootout with security personnel, was apprehended and moved, badly injured, to the (attorney general’s) unit in Quito. An ambulance from the fire department confirmed his death, the police are proceeding with collection of the cadaver,” the attorney general’s office said.
Villavicencio, a 59-year-old journalist, was one of eight candidates in the August 20 presidential election.
