The cost of tomatoes in AP has reached an all-time high. More than Rs.200/kg! – indiansupdate.com
On Tuesday, the tomato rate reached a record high at the Madanapalle market. Once again, tomato prices in Andhra Pradesh have reached an all-time high, surpassing Rs. 200 per kg. This trend continues, and on Tuesday, the Angallu market in Madanapalle constituency of Annamaiya district recorded a record price of Rs. 224 per kg for high-quality tomatoes. Around ten thousand crates of tomatoes were harvested, and a crate fetched Rs. 5,600 in the auction. These tomatoes are being exported to northern states.
Similar situations are observed in other markets like Kakkalapalli tomato market mandi in Anantapur district. Here, a kilo of tomatoes is priced at around Rs. 215, and a basket of 15 kg was sold at an exceptional price of Rs. 3,200, marking the highest price in the history of this market. Many farmers are benefiting from this surge in prices, with some becoming millionaires.
The increased demand for tomatoes has attracted traders from the northern states who are queuing up to buy them. The government is reviewing tomato prices periodically and providing subsidies in farmers’ markets to mitigate the impact on the common man, who is now worried about the rising tomato prices.
The significant increase in tomato prices is attributed to factors like lower yields in areas outside of Chittoor, Anantapur, and Kurnool, and traders from other states rushing to buy tomatoes in Andhra Pradesh. The high demand across the country is causing tomatoes to be sold at premium prices as soon as they reach the market. Overall, the tomato prices have seen a nationwide trend of fluctuation.
