Syeda Lulu Minhaj Zaidi, a Hyderabad resident, came to America in order to obtain a master’s degree in information science at TRINE University in Detroit. Unfortunately, she faced depression and starvation after her belongings were stolen. The distressing situation of Syeda Lulu Minhaj Zaidi came to public attention when a concerned citizen shared her video on Twitter, seeking immediate help from External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

 

Amjed Ullah Khan, spokesperson of the Majlis Bachao Tahreek, also took to Twitter to raise awareness about Zaidi’s condition, stating that she was found in a terrible state in Chicago and her mother was appealing to bring her back. In the video, Zaidi appears visibly weak and malnourished, struggling to remember her name initially. She narrates her deteriorating condition and mentions being taken to a hospital, which further weakened her after blood samples were extracted for testing. A guy in the clip gives her a meal and promises her of assistance, recommending she go to India.

 

The Consulate General of India in Chicago responded to the video on Twitter, expressing their awareness of the case and urging Zaidi to keep in touch via direct message. Zaidi’s situation shocked many, with people calling for swift action to safely bring her back to Hyderabad. Expressing their dismay, one Twitter user recalled knowing her since childhood and emphasized her academic brilliance.

 

In her letter to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Zaidi’s mother, Sayeda Wahaj Fatima, requested his intervention in rescuing her daughter and bringing her back to India. The letter detailed Zaidi’s pursuit of education in the US and the distressing circumstances leading to her current state. The mother’s plea sought the assistance of the Indian Embassy in Washington DC and the Indian Consulate in Chicago to urgently intervene and facilitate Zaidi’s return to India. She requested to be informed about the actions taken in this regard.
