Residents of Scranton, Pennsylvania, President Biden’s hometown, offer a spectrum of opinions on his recent claim to view the U.S. economy through their eyes, reported Fox News. In a November 13 tweet, Biden stated he doesn’t assess the economy from the vantage points of Wall Street and Park Avenue but rather through the lens of the people in Scranton and Claymont, Delaware.
Critical voices: Scranton locals speak out
Mark from Susquehanna, Pa., expressed skepticism, stating he doesn’t believe Biden sees the economy from a local perspective. When asked about a preferred 2024 presidential candidate, Mark unreservedly named “Trump.”
Similarly, Robert Jones of Scranton criticized Biden, labeling him the “worst president we ever had.” Jones perceives a decline in the economy since Biden took office and voiced support for the GOP frontrunner in 2024.
Local resident Kevin expressed disillusionment with the political class, asserting that none truly sees through the eyes of the people but rather through the lens of Washington. He noted a perceived worsening of the economy without declaring a 2024 favorite.
Controversial roadway renaming add to local sentiment
Local leaders expressed their sentiments through controversial roadway renamings. In 2021, the city council unanimously voted to change the name of the Central Scranton Expressway to the “President Biden Expressway” and renamed the downtown arterial, which becomes Spruce Street, to “Biden Street.” Some local business owners expressed dissatisfaction due to address re-registration costs.
Jason from Moscow, Pa., strongly criticized the renamings and President Biden’s recent tweet, calling it “not accurate.” He asserted that Biden “doesn’t see the economy, period,” citing his childhood departure from Scranton.
Varied opinions on Biden’s connection to Scranton
Nellie of Scranton questioned Biden’s association with the city, stating he is not a true “Scrantonian” after moving to Wilmington at a young age. She expressed uncertainty about the 2024 race and suggested Biden may not complete a full second term.
Betty from Dickson City opined that Biden doesn’t see the economy as locals do and that it has worsened. Despite her concerns, she leans toward Biden over Trump and attributes some of the economic challenges to dealing with COVID-19.
Mark, another Scranton resident, criticized the state of the economy, emphasizing the impact on people’s lives. He expressed weariness with the dominance of scandals involving Trump and Biden in the political news cycle.
While opinions vary, these voices from Scranton reflect a range of sentiments on President Biden’s economic perspective and leadership as the nation navigates through economic challenges.
