Some Google Drive users have reported that some of their recent files stored in the cloud have disappeared. Users have complained of losing recent data and changes in the folder structure. It seems that the cloud service has rolled back to a storage snapshot from around a few months ago.
One GoogleDrive user recently reported losing all their data going back to May.The user took their complaint to Google’s community support site, where they were assisted by the support team in attempting to recover their data. However, the recovery process, which included backing up and restoring a DriveFS folder, was unsuccessful.
One user mentioned that their IT specialist was unable to locate any traces of the lost files, while another user reported that Google requested an export of their drive diagnostic data.
Others have also complained of missing files on Google’s support forum, and reported missing files that files stored after May 2023 have been missing, while for some, this extends back to the past year or two.
The thread on the support site has now garnered 192 users who have clicked the “I have the same question” button, with several panicked commenters reporting similar issues.
What does Google have to say on the issue?
Google has officially confirmed a problem on its Community forums, which it links to versions 84.0.0.0 through 84.0.4.0 of the Drive for Desktop app. The reason for the bug is still unknown, and Google says that it is investigating the issue.
Google is recommending affected users not to disconnect their Google account from the desktop app, and not to delete or transfer any data from the “DriveFS” folder on their devices. Instead, the company suggests creating a copy of this folder if there is sufficient space available. It is further not recommended to delete or move the app data folder, which can be found at %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Google\DriveFS on Windows and ~/Library/Application Support/Google/DriveFS on macOS.
Google advises to create a backup copy of the app folder as a precaution.
“We’re investigating reports of a sync issue affecting a small group of Drive for desktop users (v84.0.0.0 – 84.0.4.0) and will provide further updates. If there is space available on your hard drive, we suggest creating a copy of the app data folder.” Saitej, from the Google Drive Team, posted on the forum.
