Indigenous People’s Day is meant to honour those who lived in the US before Christopher Columbus‘s arrival, acknowledging their significant contributions and enduring legacy. In 2021, President Joe Biden officially recognised Indigenous Peoples’ Day, underscoring the historical injustices “systematically sought to assimilate and displace Native people and eradicate Native cultures.”
Columbus Day itself is a federal holiday, commemorating the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus. However, some states and cities have shifted their focus to Indigenous Peoples’ Day to acknowledge the mistreatment and enslavement of Indigenous people as a pivotal part of American history.
With the long weekend approaching, questions arise about what will remain open or closed.
Mails
This upcoming Monday, all post offices will remain closed. While FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy have made adjustments to their services in observance of Columbus Day, all other deliveries will proceed as usual. One can continue to send packages on any regular business day.
UPS will maintain its pickup and delivery services during this time. However, a one-day delay is expected in UPS SurePost and UPS Mail Innovations deliveries due to the Federal (USPS) holiday. Notably, The UPS Store locations will be open and operational.
Banks
Monday, October 9, is a Federal Reserve bank holiday. However, markets will be open – Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange will be trading. It is recommended that one verify the bank’s working hours before visiting a branch.
Schools
While Columbus Day holds federal holiday status, not all public schools adhere to a uniform policy regarding this day. Depending on the specific state and district guidelines, numerous schools may choose to remain open on Columbus Day.
Retail
Retailers like Target, Walmart and Kroger, will remain open. However, it is advised to check with local businesses for their working hours
