Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Wednesday responded to his mimicry by TMC’s Kalyan Banerjee. Dhankhar said, “…I don’t care about how much you insult Jagdeep Dhankhar. But I can’t tolerate (insult of) Vice President of India, farmers community, my community… I will not tolerate that I could not protect the dignity of my post, it is my duty to protect the dignity of this House..”

Dhankhar’s statement came after a major controversy erupted post the suspension of Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee in Parliament. Video clips depicting Banerjee allegedly mimicking the Rajya Sabha chairman’s mannerisms circulated widely on social media. The incident gained attention when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was observed recording Banerjee’s mimicry on his mobile phone during a mock sitting of the House.
The controversy stirred discussions on the appropriateness of such behavior, especially from a sitting Member of Parliament. Critics argued that such actions undermined the dignity and decorum of parliamentary proceedings. The incident also raised questions about the conduct of politicians within the legislative framework.
The videos went viral, leading to public outrage and calls for disciplinary action against Kalyan Banerjee. Some criticized Rahul Gandhi’s involvement, suggesting that recording and sharing such moments might not be in line with the seriousness expected from elected representatives.
